Sexual Assault Legal Services Team

The Sexual Assault Legal Service will advise and represent victim/survivors, including advice and support throughout any engagement with police and criminal proceedings. The Service will be delivered in partnership with Victim Support ACT to provide integrated legal services and case management to women, trans and non-binary people and children who are victim/survivors of sexual assault.

About the positions

The Women’s Legal Centre ACT is recruiting two positions to establish the Sexual Assault Legal Service. We are recruiting a Head of Practice and a Senior/Solicitor to form the new team.

The Head of Practice will lead the establishment and delivery of the new service. This includes working with internal and external stakeholders to develop and refine practices; supervising the legal practice and providing high quality, trauma-informed legal advice and casework to clients, including representation in ACT and Commonwealth courts, in sexual assault matters. The position will also build relationships and advocate for law reform to support the operation of the service and improve law and policy responses to sexual assault.

The Solicitor will be responsible for providing high quality, trauma-informed legal advice and casework to clients, including representation in ACT and Commonwealth courts, in sexual assault matters and actively contributing to the establishment, stakeholder relationships and systemic advocacy required to support the new service.

About you

We are looking for lawyers with experience and understanding of the criminal justice process in relation to sexual assault who want to use their knowledge to inform the development of a unique service providing advice and representation to women in this jurisdiction.

The Head of Practice will require:

  • 4+ years practice experience (criminal law highly desirable), and eligibility for admission to practice.
  • Leadership skills and experience – ability and drive to build, deliver and promote a new and unique practice area in an integrated and trauma-informed way .
  • Stakeholder engagement – demonstrated ability to develop and maintain productive relationships, including with key and senior stakeholders in the justice sector
  • Systems thinking – ability to analyse existing laws and policies, identify gaps and advocate for reforms to better protect the rights of victim survivors of sexual assault

The Solicitor will require:

  •  2+ years practice experience (criminal law highly desirable), and eligibility for admission to practice.
  • Desire to work in an integrated and trauma-informed way with other professionals including Case Managers and Social Workers.
