Senior Solicitor – Family Law

Two positions available:
* 12 month fixed term contract (maternity leave)

Provide family law, family violence and care and protection advice, as well as ongoing family law casework as part of an integrated, multidisciplinary, trauma informed team.

Tasks and Responsibilities

Deliver high quality legal advice and casework to clients in family law matters, including representation in the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia, and ACT Courts and Tribunals.

  • Maintain a high level of technical competence in the areas of family law, family violence and care protection.
  • Manage your own case load with limited direction.
  • Work collaboratively with the Principal Solicitor – Family Law to lead legal service delivery, including active risk management; and compliance with the collection of accurate legal services data.
  • Supervise legal practitioners and oversee complex casework.
  • Build relationships with staff at partner organisations, including by delivering community legal education and through community outreach.
  • Work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team to provide responsive, trauma-informed services.
  • You’re a qualified lawyer with experience practising in family law who is interested in addressing gender inequality and using your legal skills to support women across the ACT. Your background may be from community legal or justice related roles, or you have relevant experience from working in a law firm or private practice. Ideally you bring knowledge of family and domestic violence or care and protection matters, and you’re able to:
  • Deliver high quality, accurate legal advice and manage casework
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with community partners and stakeholders
  • Deliver community legal education to a range of audiences
  • Work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team in a trauma-informed service delivery model, with a personal commitment to reflection and self-care practices

Qualifications & experience

Minimum of four (4) years’ post-admission experience in family law practice and eligibility to hold an ACT Practicing Certificate.

WLC provides legal services within a multi-disciplinary, trauma informed practice model that incorporates cultural support and collaborative services to provide wraparound support to women, while striving to uphold our vision to keep women safe, strong and in control of their lives.
